DESIGN 21: Millennium Promise Winner

Normally I post good design- but this is for a good cause.

A few months ago, DESIGN 21, opened its 13th competition to the public. Designers were asked to create an online campaign, preferably with the wit of guerilla marketing. They were asked to promote for the Millennium Promise, a non-profit organization that aims at achieving global knowledge of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

The brief was simple: design a new media campaign that advocated the Millennium Development Goals. The message should educate the public about the main objective of the Millennium Development Goals, entrants were to choose ONE or ALL of the goals in the campaign, entries must be limited to text, images, and video/audio, and entrants choose the target audience and describes how their campaign will be effective at reaching that goal.

The problem with network design is that the deciders are usually design illiterate and therefore choose a very mediocre piece, such as the winning design by Jisuk Jung. The image that represents the entire winning campaign are two badly chosen stills. Designers usually choose Yellow and Black as warning signs- they represent danger and uneasiness. Jisuk Jung's purpose on introducing us to the Millennium Goals with such negative colors is beyond me. Now, if you actually look one step closer at the two stills- it's not even the same yellow. Everything about this design feels like it came out of the standard stock library- particularly the smile on the happy face. Overall, the image feels standard and will therefore blend in to the rest of the bad design out there.

I'm moving to Russia

Came across this incredibly, wonderfully, beautifully, a genius of aesthetics design group, ONY. The loading page is enough to foretell what gems lie inside- The design is a blend of minimal elegance and contemporary solutions to big names such as Toshiba and Cheetos. I think I've fallen in love. Enjoy.

Matthew Woodson vs. Spiders Everywhere

Matthew Woodson, a Chicago illustrator, suffered the ill-fate of being bit by one of those nasty eight-legged poisonous creatures- yup a spider. He's currently accepting commissions to pay the cost of his eight month treatment. Contribute to the talented illustrator if possible- : )

"On Monday of last week I was bitten by a yet unknown poisonous spider on my right knee. By Tuesday I was running a high fever and unable to walk. On Friday evening I collapsed and was rushed to the ER. After a series of x-rays and a whole lot of examination, I was informed that I had a rather large abscess and cellulitis due to the spider's bite. I was sent home early Saturday morning after having my knee surgically 'drained' and in more pain than I have ever been in. After a doctor's appointment this Monday, another abscess was drained and I was informed that I would need to see a doctor weekly until the wound had healed, which could possibly take up to 8 months. Within these 8 months there will remain the very real threat of the infection spreading into the bone of my knee, as well as the possibility of blood poisoning.

Any possible commission you could have for me; gifts, invitations, cards, wall art, tattoos, anything. I am interested in the job. I will also definitely consider larger personal commissions, considering the work involved. I would prefer to only be working in black and white, but don't be afraid to ask about color. I haven't exactly figured out how pricing will go yet, but obviously pricing will be negotiable and varying, but for small to medium sized drawings I was thinking between $100 - $500 through paypal"

Higgs Boson's Awwww!

I have the most incredible fascination with particle physics especially when it comes down to the subatomic level, aaah! I also have the weirdest plush toys- like Maromi from Paranoia Agent, Mike from Monsters, Inc., Meatwad from Aqua Teen, etc- but this one just tops all of them!!!!!!!

Awww, I want a Higgs Boson!!!!

To wear or not wear---

This past week I came across this wonderful magazine at my usual curiosity stop at Barnes and Noble. The magazine itself is so incredibly well designed it gave me butterflies in my stomach. The cover is what caught my eye- matte cover with random spots of gloss typography- Open any page in this magazine and you will be blessed with GREAT time-consuming design. A breath of fresh air!!!!

Radiohead does it again

Talk about ingenuity!!!!

Coming Together

Here's a chance two put our good skills to good use. Let's come together!

On Pragmatic Living

It's enlightening to see designers take on the task of practical design.
The duality of every object further helps our methods of pragmatic living-

Take a look at ten designers who took on the arduous task of creating 2+ usages of a single design.
